Ammonium Metatungstate and Ammonium Metavanadate Difference

The biggest difference of ammonium metatungstate (AMT) and ammonium metavanadate lies in that they are two completely different substances essentially; just because their acid radical are formed by positive acid losing a water molecule; and according to Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, their ammonium salts are called ammonium metatungstate and ammonium metavanadate.

Property Difference

1. Ammonium metavanadate is a white to light yellow crystalline powder, slightly soluble in cold water, hot ethanol and ether, but soluble in hot water and dilute aqueous ammonia, and will transfer into toxic vanadium pentoxide when burned in the air;
2. AMT is water-soluble white or yellowish crystalline powder, has high solubility in water for about 300g/100ml.

Application Difference

1. Ammonium metatungstate is mainly used as chemical reagent, catalyst, drier, mordant, ect.; widely used as a glaze in the ceramic industry; also used for manufacturing vanadium pentoxide;
2. Ammonium metatungstate is raw materials of tungsten oxide, tungsten powder and other tungsten compounds, also being the main raw material of tungsten-based oil refinery catalyst.
